Indeed, Allah Alone Knows What Is In The Heart
The Mutual Disillusion (64:4)
4. He knows what is in the heavens and on earth, and He knows what you conceal and what you reveal. And Allâh is the All-Knower of what is in the breasts (of men).
A Gentle Reminder on the Matters of the Heart.
To my dear brothers, and to all those who sincerely seek to understand one another,
One of the most beautiful aspects of our faith is also one of the most humbling: none of us can truly know what’s in another person’s heart. Not a Scholar. Not a Mawlana. Not a Sufi Shaykh. And certainly not You/Me.
The Quran is clear — Allah alone holds the keys to the unseen:
“And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him.“ (Al-An’am 6:59)
What moves me deeply is that even our beloved Prophet ﷺ was not granted this knowledge. Allah Himself said to him regarding the hypocrites of Madinah: “You do not know them — We know them.” (At-Tawbah 9:101)
If the most beloved of all creation was not given sight into the hearts of those around him, how can any of us claim it?
This is why the Prophet ﷺ rebuked Usama ibn Zayd with those famous words — “Did you split open his heart to know whether he meant it or not?” — a reminder for all generations that the interior of a person’s faith belongs to Allah alone.
So when someone says they can sense the state of another’s heart, or that they have been shown what others cannot see — however sincere they may be — the scholars of our tradition, from Imam al-Ghazali to Ibn Taymiyyah, counsel us gently but firmly: measure every such claim against the Quran and Sunnah. If it cannot be found there, it is not for us to accept.
The agreed position across all four schools of jurisprudence is simple and wise: “We rule according to the apparent, and Allah takes care of the hidden.“
This is not a harsh stance — it is a merciful one. Allah in His wisdom has veiled what is in our hearts, and that veil is a gift. It protects our dignity, keeps us in a state of hope and humility before Him, and reminds us that judgment belongs to no one but Allah.
My sincere advice to myself first, and then to my brothers: let us be careful not to delve into the inner states of others. Let us judge by what we can see, speak with kindness about what we cannot, and leave the rest — as Allah has instructed — entirely to Him.
Wa Allahu a’lam — and Allah knows best.
